In the US, Black History Month is celebrated annually in February. The celebration of Black History Month and the study of black history are attributed to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. The second week of February was chosen because it marks the birthdays of two people who had a profound effect on black Americans, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
