Using Idioms

Idioms are colorful ways of describing something. For example, it is "raining cats and dogs," does not mean dogs and cats are falling from the sky; it means it is raining heavily.

At the link below, click on the different letters of the alphabet to see a list of idioms that begin with each letter. Select 10 idioms from the list and read the meaning and how the idiom is used in a sentence. Write your own sentence for each of the idioms you selected and underline the idiom in each.

Interactive Whiteboard Tip:   Display the Web site on the interactive whiteboard and choose a few idioms to go over as examples for the class. When the students have finished writing their own sentences, open a word processing document on the interactive whiteboard. Have students come up and type one of their sentences. Ask the class what the idiom in the sentence means.
