Reading the News

Choose a category and then a CNN news story to read from the Web site below. After you finish reading the story, you may choose to view it as a video clip and listen to it as well. After viewing and listening to the story, go to the Activities box on the left and perform the vocabulary and sequencing exercises.

When you have finished the exercises, choose another CNN story to read. Fill-in the chart from the second Web site, based on your second news story.

Lesson Name:   Reading the News
Objective:   Students will read an online CNN news story. They will also view and listen to it. Reading comprehension will be tested by completing a vocabulary and sequencing activity. Students will fill in a 5W's chart based on a second news story they read.

Interactive Whiteboard Tip:   Once students have completed the 5 W's chart, display the site on the interactive whiteboard. Have volunteers come up and give a brief synopsis of the news story they read. While giving their synopsis, they can write notes on the chart using the whiteboard's pen/markers.
