Public Speaking

We constantly evaluate others by the manner in which they speak. Opinions are formed about people based on what they say and how they say it. Therefore, good speech is something that everyone should try to master.

1. Click on the "Public Speaking" link below. Read all the parts of the Web site while taking notes.
2. Print the "Graphic Organizer" below and identify the 5 main ideas of public speaking. Write each main idea in the numbered section. For each, put the idea into your own words and then explain why the concept is important.
3. Select a "how-to" topic that you could present to the class. For example, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
4. Write the following on 3x5 index cards:
   a. The topic of your speech
   b. The goal of your speech
   c. The main ideas of your speech
   d. Who the target audience will be
5. Perform your speech for the class; bring in any necessary props needed to present your topic.

Hand in your graphic organizer and your 3x5 index cards after you have performed your speech.

Lesson Name:   Public Speaking
Objective:   Students will gain knowledge on the basics of public speaking skills by reading information on how to do public speaking. Students will identify the five main ideas of public speaking and write them in a graphic organizer, along with a description of each main idea, and why they feel the idea is important. Students will then select a topic to perform a "how-to" speech in front of the class, using the correct form.
